Life at Mary Carrico Catholic School!!
2018-2019
Each morning our students gather in the gym for breakfast and opening prayer. The "Memorare" has been declared our school prayer, so students and staff begin each day by praying it together. Birthdays and prayer intentions are recognized, the Morning Offering is prayed, the flag is saluted and the Pledge of Allegiance is recited, ALL before heading upstairs to begin classes!! |
Sweet Visitor!
On Monday, February 18th, Angela Frazier (grandmother of Lilli Hodskins) brought in a three week old baby lamb! This particular baby lamb was one of triplets, born during winter days with frigid temperatures. Because the lambs came before their due date, they were very small and sickly. Ms. Frazier told us that they were very LUCKY that even one survived these difficult conditions, and guess what they named this sweet baby.............you got it!! Lucky!!!!!
Lucky was a very good sport about being touched, and even held, by many of our students and teachers. What is it about a baby of most any kind that will brighten even the grayest of days, and bring smiles to the faces of everyone present?!! We all enjoyed this surprise visit from Lilli's lamb who is LUCKY to be alive!!

Catholic Schools Week
The weather tried to put a damper on our Catholic Schools Week, but DID NOT succeed!! It took two weeks to complete, but we were able to celebrate well the blessing of our sweet Catholic school! Enjoy the pictures of the different events.
On Monday morning the students were blessed to listen to Fr. Jason McClure, Sr. Monica Seaton and Sydney and Isaac Warren talk about their respective vocations. Each of them is a blessing to this community, and perhaps we will have lots of kiddos follow in their footsteps!
The Brescia BearCat visited us for lunch on Monday! The students enjoyed talking to and dancing with her!!
Our students played Minute-to-Win-It. Lots of challenges, but they were up to it!!
Last Wednesday, despite all the rain, we had lots of parents and grandparents come out to enjoy the Breakfast and Books, then go to Mass with us! We love our families, and the way they support our little school!!
We celebrated Mass with Fr. Augusty, our families and our community. Jesus celebrated the first Mass at the Last Supper. There He told us to "do this in remembrance of me", and because we love Him and want to obey Him, we take part in Mass as often as possible. Our school Masses are celebrated each Wednesday of the school year at 8:30 a.m. The Mass pictured below was the 10 am parish Mass at St. William on January 27. It allowed us to serve the community, and to share with them our love for our school.
Each year during Catholic Schools Week, our students visit the sisters at Mount St. Joseph. Below you see them sharing some of the dances they have learned. Our children bring a lot of joy to others in the community through singing, dancing and just being themselves!!
Grades 5-8 enjoyed ice skating for a couple of hours at the Edge Ice Skating Arena.
Already the 100th Day of School!!
Can't believe it is ALREADY the 100th day of school!! This year is passing so quickly! Some new friends have joined us today to celebrate with us. They LOOK really old, but they sure do move around like a YOUNG person!! (Just click on pictures to see the full picture.) Enjoy the pictures of our friends!!
Our 3rd-4th graders dressed up like the 1980's because there are about 80 days of school LEFT this year! Even Mrs. Emmick was decked out 80's style!!

Geography Bee
Each year grades 5-8 have the opportunity to participate in a geographic bee sponsored by the National Geographic Society. This year Gavin Howard won first place, and the right to take the written test and compete at the state level. Declan Williams was second place, and Eli Mattingly was third place. Should something happen to prevent Gavin from participating at the state level, these would be the next two in line to compete. There were six other students who received honorable mention. They are: Kailee Lanham, Sarah Payne, Kamryn Johnson, Kenzie McDowell, Taylor Lanham, and Abby Payne. Congratulations everyone!!

Bluegrass Assembly
On January 11, 2019, Randy Lanham brought the Price Sisters to our school to teach us and entertain us with their Bluegrass Music. We listened to the harmonies and instruments that characterize Bluegrass, and even got up to do some of the Virginia Reel! Randy attended MCCS as a student MANY years ago, and is uncle or cousin to several of our students! He is well loved here! Some of the students here also take instrumental lessons from Randy and the Bluegrass Museum. Music is such a large and joyful part of the culture here in Knottsville and at MCCS!!
Randy Lanham is in the House!!!
During this week, Dec. 10-14, Randy Lanham has been spending time teaching the 3-6 grade how to play guitar. It is amazing to hear a whole class of kids playing "Jingle Bells"! So many people in Knottsville have music running through their veins! It is a pleasure to see the adults passing on that gift of music to the younger generation.
3rd-4th Grade Saints Wax Museum
What do YOU want to be when you grow up? We are all called to become SAINTS!! To live lives that lead us to Jesus and eternity in heaven with Him! Our 3rd-4th graders spent time learning about some men and women who lived in days past, ordinary people with ordinary struggles, who managed to love extraordinarily and die in friendship with God. For a morning they actually became the person they chose, and presented all they had learned with family and friends. They even went over to the Bishop Soenneker Home to share with the residents there. Great job 3rd-4th graders!! Thanks for reminding us of who we are supposed to be, and the joy that waits for us if we can finish the race in Jesus' arms!
Food Drive -- November 2018
A big THANK YOU to everyone who brought in non-perishable food items! Feeding the hungry is one of the Works of Mercy that helps us extend Jesus' love to our needy brothers and sisters. These items will be joined with the food items brought in by the Church, and will be distributed to those identified as being in need. "God we thank you for the surplus of food we have, and ask you to help us to be generous and grateful everyday, to share with everyone around us. Help us to love like YOU love!!"
Cash for Trash -- 10/19/2018
Our 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classes are picking up trash today to raise money for the class trip in May. This has been a tradition here at Mary Carrico for several years now, and the parents and students spend the entire year raising money to fund this trip. Only the 7-8th grades, with their parents, go on the class trip, but the entire school works together to raise the money, knowing that someday each will have their turn! Thank you 5-6th graders for helping pick up trash today!

Grandparents' Day Celebration -- Sept. 12, 2018
MCCS celebrated Grandparents' Day with Mass at 8:30 am, followed by donuts, coffee and a book fair in our cafeteria. We have such a loving community, and LOTS of parents and grandparents came out to celebrate with us. Our grandparents are irreplaceable, an extra layer of love, given to us by God our Father. No matter what age we are, or even if they have already died and passed into eternal life, their influence lives on helping to shape us into better people. These children witnessed your love and support today as you joined in our celebration. Fr. Augusty tried to get students to tell why they love their grandparents so much, but the chatty-chatty kids became very quiet when the microphone was held in front of them!! Thanks to all who were able to be with us today, and a prayer of blessing for those who were not able to be here.

Confirmed in the Holy Spirit
On Thursday, April 26 at 6:30 pm, eighteen young men and women received the sacrament of Confirmation. Bishop Medley joined us for the celebration, as he is the normal minister of the sacrament. It was a wonderful celebration for the parishes of St. William and St. Lawrence! Now these young people are strengthened with the gifts of the Holy Spirit and ready to serve the Church as we all lead each other to Jesus!
